Update December 28th

I’m sorry I haven’t posted anything but I’ve been busy with school. I got my Invite to try out the Boxee beta today, but I’m going to be building a new computer in the next day or so. So I’m going to install it on that when it’s done. I should have a post about it around the end of the week.

WordPress for iPhone 2 Released

A couple days ago Automattic(the company behind the immensely sucessfull blogging platform WordPress) released WordPress for iPhone version 2. The many new features and enchancements include:

A new, more efficient user interface that makes it faster to switch between comments, posts, and pages.

Various user interface refinements and bug fixes

New Comments interface, with Gravatars and the author URL shown in the comment list

Passwords are now stored in the keychain

Posts are now automatically saved and restored if network connection is lost during publishing

Added persistence, so the app re-opens in the blog you last used

Added an interface for manually entering the XMLRPC endpoint for non-standard setups

Fixed rotation-related visual glitches

Fixed errors where malformed XML prevented access to XMLRPC endpoint

Fixed edge case where local drafts were sometimes not saved

Fixed the order of photos so that they’re displayed in the order they’re uploaded/

Thanks go to Weblog Tools Collection for the features list.

I wrote this post with it and overall I’d say it’s a modest improvement. Kinda like the original Tweetie and Tweetie 2.The similarity continues as WordPress for iPhone 2 is a seperate app and not a direct upgrade. And I had major issues with copying and pasting a link into the link creator.

My final opinion is that it’s better the the original WordPress for iPhone but it still needs a lot of help.

Turn Your Super-Neat Handwriting Into a Computer Font

Here’s something perfect for those budding web-designers with a hobby of calligraphy. Using FontCapture.com in five simple steps you can take your beautiful handwriting and use it in your web designs without shelling out $200 dollars for a decent tablet thingy for free! :)

By now if you are not either drooling on your keyboard or sleeping on it you probably must be asking “How do I use this thing?” Its really easy.

Please note that you must have a scanner for this to work.

Step One

Go to www.fontcapture.com/template and print out the pdf file.

Step Two

Fill out the template you downloaded in step one.

Step Three

Scan the completed template as a gray-scale image with a resolution about 200dpi. Fix up and darken the image as necessary and re-save the image as either a GIF or a PNG.

Step Four

Go to www.fontcapture.com/upload, fill out the “Font Name” and “Author Name” fields than browse for your the image created in the last step and click upload.

Step Five

If the preview provided by FontCapture is what you want than click “download the font” and follow the provided installation instructions otherwise you may want to go back to step 3 and touch up your image some more.

Gravity Forms Released

Finally the premium wordpress forms plugin GravityForms has been released. Just watcGravity Forms Plugin for WordPresshing the demo on their site (at gravityforms.com of course) makes we want to purchase it. Though when looking at the comparison chart of the different licenses  of the plugin available for purchase here it appears that even with the single site license you can use the plugin on multiple sites you just wont get automatic updates on all of them.

The prices are quite reasonable considering the apparent power and simplicity of this plugin making me recommend this plugin to anyone who uses WordPress as a CMS.

You can purchase this amazing plugin here.

WordPress 2.8.4 Released

Lately for some reason the popular open-source blogging platform WordPress (That runs this blog) has been experiencing sudden security updates (2.8.3 fixed what 2.8.2 was supposed to fix) and today (or yesterday cause I don’t know exactly when it was released) 2.8.4 came out to fix another issue.

Basically by going to a specially crafted URL that allows a malicious user to reset the password of any user who does not have a key in the database. Since this doesn’t result in the malicious use having admin access  some say it is just an annoyance and not a security risk but I think that anything that allows someone to cause trouble with your site is a security risk.

Thanks to wptavern.com for the info regarding this.

Nintendo DS Woes

After my family finally signed up for Comcast my dad decided to throttle our AP (Its a WRT54G with the standard firmware and router functions like DHCP disabled) so I wouldn’t use up all of the bandwidth. Not to much of a problem, right?

Nintendo DS

Wrong!!! The next time I tried to connect to Nintendo WFC (WiFi connection) my DS refused to authenticate. I hadn’t changed any settings on the DS. I honored the troubleshooting process and thought about what had changed the only things that had changed were the ISP(Internet Service Provider and that shouldn’t matter) and the bandwidth throttling (which shouldn’t matter either).

I had my dad disable the throttling and sure enough it worked, re-enabled the throttling and it didn’t, disabled the throttling and it worked again.

The bandwidth throttling shouldn’t matter, it didn’t effect anything else (including my Wii) except my DS and my sibling’s DS lites.

Can someone please explain why bandwidth throttling is interfering with the DS authentication with my AP?
